A lighthouse in a family story can be more than a place on the coast. Scotland’s People highlighted its lightkeeper registers on 12 May 2026, describing records of employees of the Commissioners of Northern Lighthouses, now known as the Northern Lighthouse Board, for 1837-1921.

### A career across several places

The registers record a keeper’s full name, lighthouse postings, promotions, demotions and retirement. Later volumes also include a birth date. Scotland’s People says searches can be made by keeper or lighthouse, with results linking to images of register pages. A place remembered in the family may therefore be useful even when a surname’s spelling is uncertain.

### The difference between a posting and a home

An employment record answers a particular question: where someone worked and how their service developed. It should be compared with household and civil records before drawing conclusions about where a spouse or children lived. A shared surname at the same lighthouse is a lead to investigate, rather than proof of a relationship.

### A record release with a wider history

The archive’s May article also announced a lighthouse exhibition in Edinburgh for August and September 2026. Those advertised dates have now passed. The lasting research interest is the register collection, not an invitation to attend an exhibition that has ended. The article highlights a Bell Rock staff register among the material selected for display.

### Connecting occupational clues to Polish roots

For British families with a Polish branch, an occupation can help distinguish two people with similar names. Combine it with dates, family relationships and a place of origin. Where the evidence points to Poland, our family research service investigates the relevant surviving continental records and reports the results in English. We do not obtain British official documents.
