Polish family history,
from Australia to Poland.

A family-held arrival paper, a camp name or a photograph can connect an Australian family with earlier records in Poland. These guides help you understand the evidence and define the Polish part of the investigation.

01 / Begin with your family

Tracing Polish ancestors from Australia

Connect names, places and documents already held by your family with a focused investigation in Poland.

02 / Bonegilla

Identity cards and migration evidence

Understand what a Bonegilla card may record and how to connect its clues with earlier Polish family records.

03 / Greta

A camp, a community and a family history

Use Greta memories, photographs and migration papers without confusing the history of the camp with an individual life.

04 / Earlier European records

Before the voyage to Australia

Displaced-person documents and passenger evidence may connect Australian settlement with a family’s earlier European history.

05 / Naturalisation

Dates, names and an Australian paper trail

Read naturalisation papers without confusing applications, certificates and the legal questions they may raise.

06 / Australian arrivals

Ships, ports and passenger records

Connect an arrival list or card with the right person and the earlier Polish family.

Which clue should lead the research?

If you know a Polish locality and a relative’s identity, the next question may be a birth, baptism or marriage record. If you know only an Australian camp, a voyage or a later name, establish the connection between those clues before extending the family tree. A date of arrival is not a date of birth, and a camp address is not automatically a birthplace.

Our passenger lists guide considers travel evidence. The Polish birth records guide describes an important source for identifying an earlier generation. Use the evidence appropriate to your family rather than assume every Polish migrant followed the same route.

The service described here concerns Polish and relevant continental research and the clues in documents your family already holds. It does not introduce an Australian official-document ordering service. You can commission research remotely; prices and the current order process appear on the relevant service page.

Give the next generation a documented family history.

Tell us the names, places and question behind your Australian family story. We investigate an agreed line and explain what the surviving Polish records establish.
